Literacy Test (OSSLT):  The revised date for this year’s OSSLT is Wednesday May 15th. Further details regarding the schedule for the day will follow via email.  We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.

Euclid Math Contest: This week 95 students wrote the grade 12 Euclid mathematics contest sponsored by the University of Waterloo. We look forward to hearing their results.

Spring Music Social a Huge Success: On Thursday more than 250 students from our music department enjoyed their annual spring potluck and carnival coordinated by our Music Council. Congratulations to all its members for hosting a fun and relaxing event!

Grad Awards:  Information is now available on the Moodle for Graduating PETHS Students for students who would like to apply for Graduation Awards.  Students must pay close attention to deadlines and application requirements that are outlined on the moodle.  If they have any questions, students should make an appointment with their Guidance Counsellor.  GOOD LUCK!

Our Girls Stay Healthy in G-Fit: This week our female students enjoyed yoga and a lesson in making a nutritious quinoa salad at G-Fit, an after school program sponsored by a Student Grant called “Speak Up.” G-fit sessions continue in the weeks to come. All sessions are shared on the announcements and via e-mail to all G-Fit members.

Ball Hockey Tournament Sign up Begins: This years’ annual Ball Hockey tournament begins next week.  All interested players should report to the gym after school on Tuesday.

E-mail Problems:  We have been experiencing some problems with our email system, resulting in blocks and\ or delivery delays for emails sent from our school and teacher accounts to Hotmail and Bell email addresses.  Our Board technology department is working to resolve this issue.  If you have not received recent issues of our E-Newsletter, copies can be found on our school website: https://peths.wordpress.com/.  Any questions regarding your student’s attendance can be directed to the attendance office at extension 190.

Resiliency: Important to Student Success: This week at our School Council meeting we were honoured to welcome Scott Milne and Steve Rensink from the YRDSB to speech about the importance of why students who are resilient to their set backs (or who can easily recover from) experience greater success in school. These skills help students feel a greater sense of well being and achievement in school Parents and guardians found the presentation informative and are investigating the possibility of bringing additional guest speakers to next year’s meetings to share more information on developing student resiliency.

Microwaves return to the Cafeteria:  We are pleased to share with you that as of Monday April 22nd the student microwaves will be returning to the cafeteria. We applaud our students for taking the responsibility to resolve our concern.  We encourage you to continue to speak to your children about the incident and reinforce the proper use of microwaves.

Full Disclosure:  If a student withdraws from a Grade 11 or 12 course prior to five (5) instructional days after the issue of the formal report card then the course will not be recorded on the transcript. If a student withdraws from a course more than five (5) days after the reporting period, a withdrawal (W) is entered in the credit column and the student’s mark at the time of withdrawal is recorded as a percentage in the achievement column of the transcript.

Full disclosure date for the April Mid-term Report is May 1, 2013. In order for course drop requests to be processed before the full disclosure date, students must see a guidance counsellor and have all paperwork completed and returned by April 30, 2013.

Marks for graduating students will be transmitted to Universities and Colleges on April 25, 2013.  Graduating students wishing to drop courses before the transmission must have all paperwork completed and returned to Guidance by April 24, 2013.

If a student repeats a course, each attempt and the mark will be recorded in the transcript with only one credit granted. The course with the lower mark will have an “R” entered in the credit column. Please contact the Guidance Dept if you have any questions

Withdrawals and failures from Grade 9 & 10 courses are not recorded on the Ontario Student Transcript.

Supporting our Students: Our staff has introduced a new procedure to support student accountability for their attendance. Grade 9 students with an unexcused absence in any class will have a call made home by the office. Students who are found to be truant will have a consequence that will be served the next day. For students in grades 10-12 with unexcused absences, classroom teachers will work with each student to promote improved attendance, if a student accumulates more than 3 unexcused absences, a referral will be made to an Administrator. Parents and guardians can help to support this new procedure by ensuring that a phone call is made or note is provided as soon as possible when your child is absent from school.

Our New Addition: Construction is scheduled to begin soon on our new wing. In anticipation of the increased construction traffic (and now that the weather is getting a little warmer) we encourage students to walk to school as often as they can. Walking is great exercise, a stress reliever and supports our school’s environmental efforts.

All meetings begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Library
